Language in Fiji

Fiji has three official languages: English, Fijian (iTaukei), and Hindi. English is widely spoken and is the primary language of government, business, and education, making it easy for tourists to communicate.

The Fijian language (iTaukei) is spoken by indigenous Fijians and has several dialects, though Bauan Fijian is the most common and is used in media and education. Here are some basic Fijian phrases to help you connect with locals:
Bula! – Hello! (Also means life, health, and happiness)
Vinaka – Thank you
Moce (moh-they) – Goodbye
Kerekere – Please
Io – Yes
Sega – No

The Fiji Hindi dialect, spoken by Indo-Fijians, is different from standard Hindi, as it has evolved over the years with influences from Bhojpuri and other North Indian dialects. Some basic Fiji Hindi phrases include:
Namaste – Hello
Shukriya – Thank you
Kaise ho? – How are you?

Many locals mix languages, and you may hear a unique blend of English, Fijian, and Hindi in daily conversations.
